2026 Audi RS5: Plug-in hybrid V6 out-muscles RS6's twin-turbo V8

The upcoming Audi RS5 Avant will be powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, setting it apart from its competitors. Audi has chosen to enhance the previous 2.9-liter biturbo petrol V6 engine for the new RS5, which will be available in both Sedan and Avant models. This new RS5 continues the legacy of the RS series, which began with the RS2 Avant in 1994.

Audi has made significant modifications to the V6 engine, increasing its power output to 375kW while maintaining a torque of 600Nm. Additionally, the RS5 features a 130kW/460Nm electric motor, bringing the total power to 505kW and torque to 1060Nm. However, Audi has limited the powertrain to 470kW and 825Nm for better control and longevity.

Despite its impressive power, the RS5 is heavier than its predecessors due to the PHEV setup, weighing 2355kg for the Sedan and slightly more for the Avant. The RS5 offers more than 80km of all-electric range and takes around two and a half hours to fully charge the battery.

The design of the RS5 is striking, with muscular bodywork, widened wheel arches, and unique light signatures. The RS5 boasts RS-specific features in its interior, including bucket seats and unique displays. However, the PHEV setup affects the practicality of the RS5, limiting cargo capacity.

The RS5 is equipped with Audi’s quattro system and features Dynamic Torque Control on the rear axle, allowing for precise power distribution. The RS5 also comes with a high-performance chassis, twin-valve dampers, and a sports exhaust system.

The pricing for the RS5 Sedan and Avant is yet to be announced, but given the technical complexity of the PHEV system, it is expected to be higher than its predecessor. The RS5 marks a significant milestone in Audi’s performance lineup, offering a sleeker alternative to the traditional Avant model.
