2026 Honda Prelude review: Quick drive

It has been a quarter of a century since the Prelude nameplate was last spotted in a Honda showroom. However, as the new car sits on a smooth, closed test circuit in Japan, it is evident that the name is the only connection between this vehicle and its high-revving, VTEC-powered predecessors.

The original Prelude served as a technical flagship for Honda, showcasing sharp, naturally-aspirated, front-wheel drive handling. The new sixth-generation coupe, on the other hand, is a hybrid, sharing its e:HEV powertrain with models like the Civic and CR-V.

While on paper, this may seem sacrilegious, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe has been vocal about ensuring the brand’s “joy of driving” philosophy transitions into its electrified future. The Prelude serves as the first real test of this commitment – a hero car designed to demonstrate that efficiency and driver engagement can coexist. The big question remains, can a hybrid coupe with a simulated automatic transmission truly embody the spirit of a ‘real’ Prelude?

In terms of pricing, Honda Australia has confirmed that the revived Prelude will make its way to the local market in mid-2026, with pricing yet to be finalized. Currently, in Japan, it is available in a single, high-spec variant priced at ¥6,179,800, which translates to just under A$64,000 at the current exchange rate. This pricing aligns with the Civic Type R Racing Black Package in Japan, which is priced at A$72,600 drive-away in Australia. Given the shared high-cost components with the Type R, such as the dual-axis front suspension, adaptive dampers, and Brembo brakes, it is expected that the Prelude will be positioned as a premium offering in the Australian market, likely falling within the price range of $65,000 to $70,000.

Regarding the interior of the Prelude, stepping inside reveals design elements reminiscent of the 11th-generation Civic, including a clean horizontal dashboard, honeycomb mesh air vents, and high-quality climate controls. The Prelude aims to justify its premium price tag through various upgrades, such as a standard 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9.0-inch central touchscreen equipped with Google Built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and unique leather-trimmed sports seats with fixed head restraints and a perforated houndstooth pattern. These seats are heated as standard and available in either an all-black or a two-tone blue and white color scheme.

From a practicality standpoint, the Prelude features a liftback rear-end that opens to a 428-litre boot, significantly larger than competitors like the Toyota GR86. The 60:40-split, folding rear seat backs further expand the cargo space, making room for two medium suitcases or a pair of surfboards.

Under the bonnet, the 2026 Prelude is powered by the e:HEV hybrid system, featuring a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a two-motor hybrid system. The combined system outputs 147kW/315Nm, exclusively sent to the front wheels. The standout feature is the transmission, or lack thereof, as the Prelude utilizes Honda’s direct-drive e-CVT system with the ‘S+ Shift’ system, emulating the feel of an eight-speed automatic transmission.

When it comes to driving the Prelude, the simulated transmission system offers a unique and engaging experience, delivering rapid upshifts and downshifts without the typical CVT drone. The chassis features the dual-axis front suspension from the Civic Type R, adaptive dampers, and Brembo brakes, providing a composed and balanced driving experience that feels planted and responsive.

In terms of safety, the Prelude is equipped with the full suite of Honda Sensing safety technologies, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and more.

Overall, the Prelude presents a sophisticated and interesting package, offering a unique blend of performance, technology, and practicality. It caters to mature enthusiasts looking for a stylish, sharp-handling coupe that combines instant electric torque with fuel efficiency. The Prelude successfully demonstrates Honda’s commitment to maintaining the “joy of driving” philosophy in the era of electrification, setting a promising path for the brand’s future.
