2026 Jaecoo J5 EV: A Quick Spin Review
A new Chinese-built SUV seems to be hitting Australian shores almost every week, and the latest addition is the all-new Jaecoo J5. This compact SUV is set to make its way to local showrooms soon, offering three different powertrain options – petrol, hybrid, and fully electric.
The Jaecoo J5, a sibling to the J7 that was launched earlier this year as part of Chery’s adventure-seeking sister brand, will compete against popular models like the Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, MG ZS, and Nissan Qashqai in the compact SUV segment.
During a recent exclusive preview drive at Chery’s headquarters in Wuhu, China, we had the opportunity to test out the range-topping battery-powered Jaecoo J5. It’s worth noting that the EV variant will be the first to hit showrooms next month, followed by the petrol and hybrid models in February next year.
While final pricing details are yet to be revealed, it is expected that the J5 will come in at a lower price point compared to its larger sibling, the J7. The petrol version is estimated to have a sub-$30k drive-away price, while the EV variant could be priced under $40k.
The Jaecoo J5 boasts a spacious interior despite its compact exterior dimensions, with ample headroom and legroom for passengers. The cabin offers 480 litres of cargo space in the boot, making it a practical choice for everyday use.
In terms of design, the J5 features a minimalist yet functional layout, with high-quality materials used throughout. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, while rear passengers also enjoy a good level of comfort.
One unique feature of the Jaecoo J5 is its certification as the world’s first pet-friendly car, with anti-bacterial and anti-scratch organic silicone seat coverings. The interior is well-appointed, with a range of modern features including an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen.
The J5 is powered by a single electric motor that delivers 155kW of power and 288Nm of torque to the front wheels. It is equipped with a 58.9kWh battery pack that offers a claimed range of 402km on the WLTP cycle. The vehicle can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.7 seconds and has a top speed of 175km/h.
On the road, the Jaecoo J5 offers a smooth and zippy driving experience, with precise handling and responsive steering. The regen braking system is well-balanced, providing a comfortable driving experience.
Safety features on the Jaecoo J5 include eight airbags, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, blind spot detection, and more. While the vehicle has yet to undergo independent safety testing, it is expected to achieve a five-star safety rating.
In terms of running costs, the Jaecoo J5 is backed by an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty with free roadside assistance and capped-price servicing. It also falls under Jaecoo’s Future Price Promise scheme, ensuring a minimum value for the vehicle over set time periods.
Overall, the Jaecoo J5 presents a promising option in the compact SUV market, offering a blend of style, practicality, and eco-friendliness. With its competitive pricing and modern features, the J5 could be a standout choice for buyers looking for an electric SUV.
