BMW’s 5 Series Facelift Includes Updates to the M5 Model

BMW’s upcoming facelift for the 5 Series appears to be more extensive than initially thought, with the changes extending to the high-performance M5 variant. Recent spy shots reveal a camouflaged G90 prototype that showcases significant revisions, especially at the front of the vehicle. The new design seems to be an evolution of the current styling, with the iconic grille remaining a focal point. Unlike earlier prototypes, the kidney grilles no longer blend into the headlights, hinting at a fresh approach to the front fascia. The headlights themselves have a new shape and no longer sit adjacent to the black horizontal band seen on previous test cars.

While these alterations are not officially confirmed by BMW, they suggest a departure from the current design language. It’s possible that the headlights on the prototype are placeholders used solely for testing purposes. Despite the changes to the front end, the bumper design remains aggressive, featuring multiple air intakes to cool the powerful twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine.

One noticeable change is the reduced size of the kidney grilles, which no longer accommodate the radar sensor. It’s likely that the sensor has been relocated to the lower part of the bumper, below the license plate. This adjustment cleans up the upper section of the car, although the sensor may still be visible once the camouflage is removed. Unlike the new iX3 model, where BMW managed to conceal the sensor behind a black panel, the cost implications may have prevented a similar solution for the 5 Series facelift.

Aside from the front fascia updates, BMW seems to be implementing production-ready taillights on the M5 prototype. While the graphics are revised, the overall shape and positioning of the taillight cluster remain unchanged, similar to the upcoming 3 Series and i3 sedans.

Interior Changes and Technological Upgrades

While the exterior changes are relatively subtle, the interior of the updated M5 is expected to undergo a more significant overhaul. Drawing inspiration from the iX3 model, the cabin will likely feature the latest technology offerings from BMW. This includes the new 17.9-inch iDrive X display, Panoramic Vision windshield projection, and a 3D head-up display. Additionally, there are speculations about a passenger-side screen being introduced.

BMW is rumored to enhance the interior with more extensive use of Alcantara material, providing a premium look and feel to the cabin. The updated M5 is anticipated to be launched in the second half of 2027, following a series of spy shots that will gradually unveil the remaining design details throughout the upcoming year.
