OpenAI’s Latest Move: ChatGPT to Introduce Ads for Public Consumption
OpenAI is currently testing a new feature within ChatGPT that has the potential to revolutionize the way the web economy functions.
Previously, the ChatGPT platform has been completely free for users to enjoy.
While there are premium options available, ChatGPT has remained ad-free and has not engaged in product promotions. In contrast, platforms like Google Search utilize ads to influence consumer behavior.
OpenAI is considering introducing a similar advertising model to ChatGPT.
A recent discovery by Tibor on X revealed references to an “ads feature” within the ChatGPT Android app 1.2025.329 beta, including terms like “bazaar content,” “search ad,” and “search ads carousel.”

This potential change could have a significant impact on the web economy, as ChatGPT likely possesses a wealth of user data, possibly more than even Google.
For instance, OpenAI could use this data to deliver personalized ads on ChatGPT that align with users’ interests and preferences, similar to how Google Search ads function.
Initial reports suggest that ads will be integrated into the search experience initially, with potential for expansion in the future.
Benefits of Ads for ChatGPT
ChatGPT has experienced exponential growth, with approximately 800 million weekly users, a substantial increase from 100 million in November 2023 and 300 million in late 2024.
An OpenAI study projected 700 million users sending 18 billion messages per week by July 2025, aligning with the platform’s growth trajectory, with current traffic estimated at 5–6 billion visits per month.
With ChatGPT handling 2.5 billion prompts daily, India has emerged as the largest user base, surpassing the US in user numbers.
Given its massive user base and engagement metrics, ChatGPT is well-positioned for success with the introduction of ads. What are your thoughts on this development?
