During this week’s re:Invent 2025 event hosted by AWS, it was declared that the era of chatbot hype is over, making way for advanced frontier AI agents.

The shift in focus was evident in Las Vegas, where the industry’s fascination with chat interfaces gave way to a new requirement for frontier agents capable of autonomous operation over extended periods.

The transition signifies a move from the initial excitement surrounding generative AI to a phase centered on the practicalities of infrastructure economics and operational intricacies. The novelty of a bot crafting poems has diminished, highlighting the importance of the infrastructure necessary to support these systems at scale.

Addressing the plumbing crisis at AWS re:Invent 2025

Prior to recent advancements, developing frontier AI agents capable of executing intricate, non-deterministic tasks was a complex and customized engineering challenge. Early adopters struggled with combining tools to manage context, memory, and security.

AWS aims to simplify this complexity with the introduction of Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. This managed service serves as an operating system for agents, streamlining the backend processes of state management and context retrieval. The efficiency improvements from standardizing this layer are significant.

For example, MongoDB streamlined their toolchain by transitioning to AgentCore, enabling them to deploy an agent-based application in just eight weeks. This process previously required months of evaluation and maintenance. Similarly, the PGA TOUR leveraged the platform to develop a content generation system that boosted writing speed by 1,000 percent and reduced costs by 95 percent.

Software teams now have access to dedicated workforce, with AWS unveiling three specific frontier AI agents at re:Invent 2025: Kiro (a virtual developer), a Security Agent, and a DevOps Agent. Kiro stands out as more than a mere code-completion tool, integrating directly into workflows with specialized powers for enhanced context-based actions.

Given that agents running for extended periods require substantial compute resources, paying standard on-demand rates can erode ROI. AWS addressed this issue by making aggressive hardware announcements, including the new Trainium3 UltraServers powered by 3nm chips, boasting a 4.4x increase in compute performance over the previous generation. These advancements significantly reduce training timelines for organizations working on massive foundation models.

Furthermore, AWS introduced ‘AI Factories’ to tackle data sovereignty challenges faced by global enterprises, offering a hybrid solution by deploying racks of Trainium chips and NVIDIA GPUs directly to customers’ data centers. This approach acknowledges the need for data proximity in sensitive AI workloads.

Tackling the legacy mountain

While innovations like frontier AI agents are groundbreaking, many IT budgets are constrained by technical debt, with teams spending a significant portion of their time maintaining existing systems.

At re:Invent 2025, Amazon updated AWS Transform to address this challenge, utilizing agentic AI to automate the process of upgrading legacy code. The service now supports full-stack Windows modernization, including upgrading .NET apps and SQL Server databases.

For instance, Air Canada leveraged this service to modernize thousands of Lambda functions in a matter of days, a task that would have cost significantly more and taken weeks if done manually.

Developers focusing on code creation also witnessed an expansion in the ecosystem, with the Strands Agents SDK now supporting TypeScript in addition to Python. This move enhances type safety in the output of LLMs, aligning with the web’s evolving standards.

Sensible governance in the era of frontier AI agents

While the autonomy of agents operating for days brings immense capabilities, it also carries risks of database damage or PII leaks without immediate detection. AWS introduced ‘AgentCore Policy’ to mitigate these risks, enabling teams to establish natural language constraints on agent behavior. Additionally, ‘Evaluations’ monitor agent performance using predefined metrics to offer a safety net.

Security teams also benefit from updates to Security Hub, which now consolidates signals from GuardDuty, Inspector, and Macie into single events, reducing dashboard clutter with isolated alerts. GuardDuty leverages ML to identify complex threat patterns across EC2 and ECS clusters.

The tools unveiled at AWS re:Invent 2025, from specialized silicon to governed frameworks for frontier AI agents, are geared towards production use. Enterprise leaders are no longer questioning the potential of AI but rather the infrastructure required to leverage its capabilities effectively.
