CD Projekt and Nerial reveal Reigns: The Witcher, a strategy game in which Geralt dies a million, delicious ways

The Witcher Universe Expands with “Reigns: The Witcher”

Exciting news for fans of The Witcher franchise! Geralt of Rivia may have met his demise in a variety of humorous ways, but fear not, for his legacy lives on in a new collaboration between Nerial, Devolver Digital, and CD Projekt RED. “Reigns: The Witcher” is a fresh take on Nerial’s popular card-swiping narrative strategy game, set in the gritty and magical medieval world of The Witcher.

In this new game, players step into the shoes of the flamboyant ‘master poet’ Dandelion, who is not only Geralt’s closest companion but also his biggest headache. The premise revolves around a bet between Dandelion and Geralt, challenging Dandelion to become an ‘immortal bard’ within a year by crafting increasingly elaborate and thrilling tales of Geralt’s heroism, each culminating in his supposed demise.

Much like the original Reigns game, players must make decisions by swiping event cards left or right to fill or deplete four gauges displayed at the top of the screen. Additionally, the game features a combat system where players guide Geralt through a grid of icons representing damage, spells, and attacks. Audience applause can be channeled into leveling up, unlocking new story concepts and modifiers for future tales.

Early previews suggest that “Reigns: The Witcher” offers a blend of The Witcher’s rich lore and the engaging gameplay of Reigns. The writing captures the whimsical and lively essence of Dandelion and the Reigns writers, promising an entertaining experience. While the art style may feel familiar from previous Reigns titles, the incorporation of Tarot-inspired visuals adds a fresh touch. The music sets the scene perfectly, evoking the atmosphere of the Nilfgaardian Empire.

Fans can look forward to potential nods to other card games within The Witcher universe, such as the infamous pin-up collecting from the original game and the popular Gwent card game. The possibilities for creative storytelling and universe-expansion through Dandelion’s improvisations are endless, especially considering the upcoming seriousness of The Witcher 4. Who knows what absurd and delightful scenarios await, with Dandelion at the helm.
