Accelerating Machine Recovery: Testing Efficiency in Windows 11
Microsoft Enhances Quick Machine Recovery in Windows 11
Microsoft is continuously improving the functionality of Windows 11 with the introduction of a faster version of Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) and updated Smart App Control (SAC). These updates now allow users to toggle features without the need for a clean Windows install.
QMR is a vital tool that enables IT administrators to resolve Windows boot failures remotely, eliminating the need for physical access to the system. In the event of Windows 11 failing to start due to configuration changes or new drivers, QMR boots into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). It then launches the Quick Machine Recovery Tool, connecting to the internet to send crash data to Microsoft. This allows admins to address problematic updates and adjust settings to resolve boot issues.
The latest change announced by Microsoft is an improvement in the recovery task, which now runs a single scan to fix systems experiencing booting problems, rather than searching for solutions in a loop.
According to the Windows Insider team, the “Quick machine recovery” and “Automatically check for solutions” options are now enabled in the System Recovery settings to run a one-time QMR scan by default. This enhancement ensures that PCs with these settings enabled will undergo a one-time scan instead of repeated scans in a loop.
Quick Machine Recovery was initially introduced in November 2024 as part of Microsoft’s Windows Resiliency Initiative at Ignite 2024. It was in response to a major outage in July 2024 caused by a buggy CrowdStrike Falcon update, which rendered hundreds of thousands of Windows devices unbootable worldwide.
Microsoft began testing quick machine recovery in late March and has since rolled it out to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel. The company also announced that Smart App Control, a security feature in Windows 11 designed to block untrusted or potentially harmful apps at the process level, can now be toggled on and off without requiring a Windows clean install.

These recent changes are being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels who have installed the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7070 (KB5070300). Additionally, Microsoft released a preview update to the Dev and Beta channels last month, testing a feature that recommends running a memory scan after a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) to enhance system reliability.
