Accelerating Sustainability: Formula E’s Journey with Google Cloud AI towards Net Zero Goals
Formula E has partnered with Google Cloud AI to advance its net zero objectives by enhancing efficiency in its global logistics and commercial operations. Through an extended multi-year collaboration, the electric racing series will incorporate Gemini models to support performance analysis, streamline back-office workflows, and optimize event logistics.
This strategic alliance showcases how sports entities are leveraging cloud infrastructure to drive tangible business benefits beyond traditional sponsorship deals. The focus of the partnership is on enhancing various business operations, from race management to enhancing the overall fan experience.
Leveraging Operational Twins and Carbon Data to Achieve Net Zero Goals
While marketing exposure often drives sports partnerships, this collaboration builds upon a technical foundation established in January 2025. The elevation to “Principal Partner” signifies Formula E’s adoption of Google Cloud technologies for critical business functions.
The initial application focuses on optimizing the intricate logistics of a global championship. By employing advanced AI modeling for back-office operations and creating digital twins of race sites and events, Formula E can simulate and enhance site setups virtually.
This approach directly impacts Scope 3 emissions by minimizing the need for physical on-site surveys and reducing the transportation of heavy equipment. It plays a crucial role in maintaining Formula E’s distinction as the only sport-certified net zero carbon entity since its inception.
In addition to logistical modeling, the partnership with Google Cloud AI extends to enhancing workforce productivity. Formula E is integrating Google Workspace with Gemini AI to foster agility and efficiency across its organization, aiming to accelerate performance and streamline operations.
The efficacy of these implementations in achieving net zero targets is bolstered by previous joint initiatives. For instance, Formula E recently utilized Google’s AI Studio and Gemini models for the ‘Mountain Recharge’ project, showcasing how AI can optimize energy consumption during races.
Harnessing Google Cloud AI to Enhance Formula E’s Data Offerings
The partnership also addresses the commercial imperative of retaining and expanding digital viewership. Formula E has integrated a ‘Strategy Agent’ into its live broadcasts, providing real-time insights and predictions on race strategy and driver performance to engage viewers effectively.
This collaboration not only contributes to achieving net zero targets but also signifies a pivotal evolution in the technical architecture of both organizations. Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, emphasizes the transformative potential of Google Cloud’s AI capabilities in enhancing real-time performance optimization and strategic decision-making.
Tara Brady, President of Google Cloud EMEA, highlights the competitive advantage that Google Cloud’s AI and data analytics offer in high-stakes scenarios like motorsport. The progression from the initial partnership to this expanded collaboration underscores the positive ROI and the value of virtual simulation in optimizing physical deployments.
