Advancements in AI: Apple’s Siri and Messages Upgrade with ChatGPT Integration
Apple is expected to introduce new artificial intelligence features with the release of iOS 18 in June. The latest code discovered in the beta version of iOS 17.4 hints at Apple’s ongoing work on enhancing Siri with advanced language model technology, possibly with assistance from external sources.
It seems that Apple is utilizing OpenAI’s ChatGPT API for internal testing to aid in the development of their AI models. The code within iOS 17.4 reveals the existence of a new SiriSummarization framework that interacts with OpenAI’s ChatGPT API, indicating Apple’s focus on testing new AI capabilities.
Multiple system prompts related to the SiriSummarization framework are present in iOS 17.4, including requests such as “please summarize,” “please answer this question,” and “please summarize the given text.” These prompts also provide guidance on handling input received in the form of iMessages or SMS messages, aligning with reports of Apple integrating AI features into the Messages app.
When a user receives an SMS containing sender, content, and send time information, a voice assistant can take appropriate actions based on the message content. These actions can include MessageReply, GetDirection, Call, SaveContact, Remind, MessageContact, or None, with corresponding action values and confidence scores in JSON format.
Although Apple is not expected to rely on OpenAI models for iOS 18 AI features, they are actively testing their own AI models against ChatGPT. For instance, the SiriSummarization framework can perform summarization using on-device models, indicating Apple’s commitment to developing and refining their AI capabilities.
The code in iOS 17.4 suggests that Apple is testing multiple AI models, including their internal model named “Ajax,” as well as variants of AjaxGPT processed on-device and off-device. Additionally, references to ChatGPT and FLAN-T5 indicate Apple’s exploration of various AI technologies for integration into iOS.
Overall, Apple’s emphasis on incorporating large language models into iOS highlights their dedication to enhancing AI capabilities. By developing their own system and comparing it to external models like ChatGPT and FLAN-T5, Apple is positioning itself to deliver advanced AI features in iOS 18, as outlined in previous reports.
In a detailed overview by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s focus on AI integration in iOS 18 was highlighted, emphasizing the company’s commitment to utilizing large language models for enhanced features. With a clear directive from Apple’s software team, iOS 18 is expected to showcase advanced AI capabilities powered by the company’s proprietary technology.
