Microsoft Establishes New Superintelligence Team

Microsoft has recently announced the formation of a cutting-edge Superintelligence team under its AI division. The primary objective of this team is to pioneer the development of what Microsoft terms as “humanist superintelligence” – an advanced AI system that remains firmly under human control.

CEO of Microsoft AI, Mustafa Suleyman, unveiled this innovative team in a recent post, emphasizing the company’s commitment to shaping the future of artificial intelligence while addressing critical concerns regarding safety and control in the evolution of advanced AI technologies.

Suleyman stated, “We are dedicated to solving tangible real-world problems in a manner that is both practical and manageable. Our focus is on creating a technology that is explicitly designed to serve humanity, rather than veering into the realm of abstract superintelligence.”

This strategic approach diverges from the broader quest for artificial general intelligence (AGI), which aims to develop AI systems capable of matching or surpassing human capabilities across a wide range of tasks. This contrasts with the mission of Microsoft’s longstanding partner, OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman.

Microsoft’s early initiatives within the Superintelligence team include ventures in healthcare, where researchers are working on expert-level diagnostic models, and clean energy, where AI holds the potential to expedite advancements in materials, batteries, and fusion research.

The overarching goal is to propel technology forward “within limits,” ensuring that humanity retains control while leveraging AI’s capabilities to enhance lives on a global scale.

Suleyman will spearhead the new MAI Superintelligence Team, alongside Microsoft AI Chief Scientist Karén Simonyan and other key leaders and researchers within the Microsoft AI domain. Notably, influential figures involved in Microsoft’s model development endeavors are also expected to play a pivotal role in this initiative.
