Google recently made the decision to remove its AI model Gemma from the AI Studio platform after facing backlash from a Republican senator. The senator had raised concerns that Gemma, originally designed for developers, was generating false criminal allegations.

According to Google, the company became aware of non-developers attempting to utilize Gemma in AI Studio to ask factual questions. However, AI Studio is intended for developers and not intended for general consumer use. Gemma is part of a family of AI models specifically created for developers, with variations tailored for medical applications, coding, and analyzing text and image content.

Google clarified that Gemma was never intended for consumer use or to provide answers to factual inquiries. To avoid further confusion, access to Gemma has been discontinued on AI Studio, but developers can still access it through the API.

While Google did not specify the exact reports that led to Gemma’s removal, Senator Marsha Blackburn accused the company of defamation and bias. Blackburn highlighted an incident where Gemma allegedly provided false information in response to a question about rape accusations against her.

Gemma reportedly claimed that Blackburn had been involved in a non-consensual relationship with a state trooper during her 1987 state senate campaign. However, Blackburn vehemently denied these accusations, stating that they were entirely fabricated by the AI model and had no basis in reality.

Blackburn emphasized that the misinformation spread by Gemma was not only false but also damaging to her reputation. She urged Google to take responsibility for the content generated by its AI models and to address the issue promptly.

The incident involving Gemma highlights the ongoing challenges of ensuring accuracy and reliability in AI models.
