Amazon Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Return and Refund Practices

In 2023, a class action lawsuit was filed against Amazon, alleging that the company failed to issue refunds or re-charge customers for returned items, despite advertising “free, no hassle returns.” The lawsuit claimed that Amazon’s lack of transparency regarding return issues resulted in significant financial losses for consumers. As a response, Amazon started issuing refunds to customers who had not received their money back for returned items.

Amazon has recently agreed to allocate $363 million towards enhancing its return and refund processes. However, the company denied any wrongdoing and stated that the settlement would provide full recovery for all class members, along with interest. The settlement is pending approval from US District Court Judge Jamal Whitehead.

Following an internal review in 2025, Amazon spokesperson Maxine Tagay revealed that a small number of returns were identified where refunds were issued without payment completion or where the correct item was not verified to have been returned, resulting in no refund. Amazon has started issuing refunds and providing additional compensation to eligible customers as part of the settlement agreement.

Update, January 27th: Amazon has released a statement regarding the ongoing situation.
