Amazon Unveils Updated Dash Cart for Smart Shopping Experience
Amazon has introduced an enhanced version of its Dash Cart, a smart shopping cart that allows customers to scan items while shopping and skip the checkout line.
The new Dash Cart utilizes advanced computer vision technology for quicker barcode scanning, improved sensors for precise cart location tracking within the store, and an integrated produce scale for weighing fruits and vegetables directly in the cart.
Amazon has reduced the cart’s weight by 25% and increased the basket capacity by 40%. Additionally, the carts now recharge themselves while parked, eliminating the need for manual battery replacement by employees. The payment options have also been expanded.
The updated Dash Carts are currently available at three Whole Foods Market locations, with plans for further expansion to dozens of stores across the U.S. by the end of 2026.
In 2020, Amazon initially introduced Dash Carts as an alternative to its cashierless stores, moving away from the “Just Walk Out” technology that required complex technical infrastructure in its larger grocery stores.
During a test conducted by GeekWire in 2024 on an earlier version of Dash Cart, the experience was deemed cumbersome with a steep learning curve. However, users appreciated the ability to track total spending and access their Alexa shopping list via the cart’s screen.
Other companies like Instacart and Seattle startup Veeve have also launched similar smart cart solutions.
Amazon’s ongoing investment in the Dash Cart demonstrates the company’s evolving physical retail aspirations, focusing on incremental technological enhancements to existing shopping experiences rather than groundbreaking innovations.
Last year, Amazon introduced a “store within a store” concept that utilizes automated micro-fulfillment to bring popular brand items to Whole Foods locations. The company is also strengthening the integration of fresh grocery delivery with other Amazon.com products.
In 2024, Amazon reported over $100 billion in gross sales of groceries and household essentials, excluding sales from Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh.
