Apple Bids Farewell to Quirky iPhone Pocket
Apple surprised its fans with the release of a unique accessory earlier this month – the iPhone Pocket. Priced exorbitantly, this knitted phone holder combined vintage Apple aesthetics with the latest fashion trends, creating a distinct style statement.
The design, crafted by Issey Miyake’s studio, featured a ribbed open structure reminiscent of the iconic iPod Socks from the past, yet with a modern and trendy twist. The versatile strap, despite being called a “pocket,” could be worn in various ways, appealing to fashion-forward individuals.
Priced starting at $150, the iPhone Pocket was not meant for mass consumption. It was a limited edition product available in only ten flagship Apple stores and online in select countries including France, Greater China, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, and the US.
The exact number of units manufactured remains undisclosed, but the iPhone Pocket came in two sizes and multiple color options, indicating a significant production run. However, the demand far exceeded the supply, leading to a global sell-out within two weeks of its launch.
In the US, the inventory lasted barely a week, with popular colors quickly disappearing from the online store. In-store availability was limited to Apple SoHo in New York, where stock lasted a bit longer. By the end of the week, the fashion accessory was nearly impossible to find in the US.
While some colors and sizes remained available in countries like South Korea, they too were swiftly sold out. The limited-edition nature of the product suggested that it might not be restocked anytime soon, if at all.
As expected, secondary marketplaces like eBay saw a surge in listings for the iPhone Pocket, with many counterfeit products trying to capitalize on the original’s scarcity. While some listings might offer legitimate alternatives inspired by the original design, caution is advised when making a purchase.
Despite the frenzy surrounding the iPhone Pocket, its availability is now scarce, with no immediate plans for a restock. For those intrigued by the style but not necessarily the brand, exploring alternative options might be worthwhile, provided thorough research is conducted beforehand.
