Apple Bids Farewell to the Mac Pro Tower: Is it Truly Dead?
In a recent update, Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro, removing it from the online store with no plans for a future version. This move comes as no surprise, considering the lack of updates for the Mac Pro in the Apple silicon era, with only one update to the M2 Ultra chip in 2023. The introduction of the Mac Studio, equipped with a similar chip, highlighted the shift in the silicon landscape towards more compact yet powerful machines.
The release of the first Mac Studio in 2022, without any sign of a Mac Pro update, signaled Apple’s new direction. The M1 Ultra chip inside the Mac Studio outperformed even the most powerful 2019 Intel Mac Pro, showcasing the diminishing need for a larger desktop tower. The subsequent release of the M2 Ultra versions further solidified this, with no significant performance differences between the two machines.
While the Mac Pro boasted aesthetics and expandability through PCIe expansion slots, the reality was different. The transition to Apple silicon limited the potential for upgrades, as the M2 Ultra chip already integrated high-performance components like the GPU and unified memory. External Thunderbolt devices offered alternatives for studio-style expansions, rendering the internal PCIe slots less essential.
As leaks of Apple’s 2026 Mac roadmap surfaced without any mention of the Mac Pro, it became evident that the Mac Studio was set to dominate the professional desktop market. The decision to abandon plans for an exclusive M4 Ultra chip for the Mac Pro reinforced this shift, as the upcoming M5 Ultra chip would be exclusive to the Mac Studio.
The Mac Pro now stands as a relic of the Intel era, characterized by bulky designs and loud fans to manage heat. The efficiency of Apple’s M-series chips, demonstrated by the M2 Ultra Mac Pro’s performance parity with the Mac Studio, signifies a new era of cool and quiet computing. The future of professional desktop computing lies with the sleek and powerful Mac Studio, leaving the Mac Pro behind in the evolution of Apple’s product lineup.
