Apple Boosts AirPods Production in India: A Sound Investment
Apple is expanding its manufacturing operations in India to include not only iPhones but also AirPods, marking a significant development in the company’s global supply chain. A recent report from The Economic Times highlights the increased production capacity for AirPods at Foxconn’s plant in Hyderabad, with plans to double output to 200,000 units per month within the next six to eight months.
The expansion of AirPods production in India represents a shift in the supply chain from Vietnam to India, with Foxconn’s subsidiary, Foxconn Interconnect Technology (FIT), upgrading five existing production lines using machinery transferred from Vietnam. This move entails a substantial investment of 48 billion rupees by Foxconn, equivalent to approximately $550 million USD, and will result in the employment of around 5,000 workers at the facility.
The increased production is aimed at meeting the growing demand for Apple’s AirPods in India and serving customers in North America and Europe. This strategic move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of diversifying its production across multiple countries, a strategy that has been in the works for several years.
Apple’s Diversification Strategy
Amidst ongoing trade tensions between the US and China, Apple has been navigating challenges in its supply chain. While there are calls for Apple to shift production to the US, the company has made significant investments domestically but faces obstacles in manufacturing iPhones in the US. As a result, Apple has been exploring alternative manufacturing locations, including India, where it has been producing iPhones since 2019.
The shift of AirPods production to India is part of Apple’s efforts to reduce reliance on China and mitigate the impact of tariffs on its products. Despite challenges, including tariff exemptions and trade barriers, Apple continues to adapt its supply chain to ensure minimal disruptions to its product lineup.
Navigating China and India
In addition to challenges from China, Apple has encountered obstacles in relocating parts of its supply chain and faced restrictions on high-tech exports from China to other countries. Despite these challenges, Apple CEO Tim Cook has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to doing business in China and expanding investments in Chinese suppliers.
By diversifying its production hubs, Apple aims to reduce risks and maintain flexibility in its supply chain. If production in India progresses as planned, the country could emerge as a key manufacturing hub for Apple’s accessories, demonstrating the success of Cupertino’s diversification strategy.
