Apple Releases Major Security Updates for macOS 14.4 and iOS 17.4
Apple has recently released macOS 14.4, which includes over 50 security patches, making it the most extensive security update for macOS in recent times. The update also brings enhancements to iOS 17.4, with the total number of security fixes now exceeding 40.
Two critical vulnerabilities that were actively exploited have been addressed in macOS 14.4. The first is a kernel flaw that allowed attackers to bypass kernel memory protections. The second is an RTKit flaw that also enabled malicious parties to bypass kernel memory protections.
In addition to these two exploited issues, macOS 14.4 includes patches for over 50 other vulnerabilities across various components such as Bluetooth, ImageIO, Music, Notes, Photos, Safari, Sandbox, Share Sheet, Shortcuts, Siri, Spotlight, System Settings, and WebKit.
Apple has also updated the iOS 17.4 security release notes to incorporate most of the fixes provided in macOS 14.4, resulting in an expanded list of over 40 security patches for iOS.
The detailed security release notes for macOS Sonoma 14.4, Ventura 13.6.5, and Monterey 12.7.4 can be found on Apple’s website. The release of watchOS 10.4, tvOS 17.4, and visionOS 1.1 also includes various security patches, but macOS received the most comprehensive updates.
Overall, the security patches address a wide range of issues, including privacy concerns, elevation of privileges, bypassing security measures, and potential code execution vulnerabilities. Apple has acknowledged the assistance of several researchers and security experts who contributed to identifying and addressing these vulnerabilities.
It is crucial for macOS users to update their systems to the latest version to ensure protection against potential security threats. By staying up to date with security patches, users can mitigate the risk of exploitation and safeguard their data and privacy.
