Apple Cuts Trade-In Prices for iPhones, iPads, and Macs

For those considering upgrading to the latest iPhones this year, there is some disappointing news. Apple has recently reduced the trade-in values for older models, with some seeing decreases of up to $110 from their previous levels.

Notably, the older iPhone models have been hit harder than the newer ones. Trade-in values for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have only dropped by $20, while the iPhone 16 Pro models have seen a $30 decrease. However, the 2023 iPhone 15 Pro Max has plummeted by $160, going from a maximum trade-in value of $630 down to $470.

Below is the comprehensive list of changes, initially reported by MacRumors:

Model New Trade-in Value Old Trade-in Value Change
iPhone 16 Pro Max $670 $700 -$30
iPhone 16 Pro $550 $580 -$30
iPhone 16 Plus $450 $470 -$20
iPhone 16 $430 $450 -$20
iPhone 15 Pro Max $470 $630 -$160
iPhone 15 Pro $400 $500 -$100
iPhone 15 Plus $330 $440 -$110
iPhone 15 $310 $400 -$90
iPhone 14 Pro Max $370 $455 -$85
iPhone 14 Pro $300 $380 -$80
iPhone 14 Plus $240 $300 -$60
iPhone 14 $220 $290 -$70
iPhone 13 Pro Max $300 $370 -$70
iPhone 13 Pro $230 $300 -$70
iPhone 13 $180 $250 -$70
iPhone 13 mini $150 $200 -$50
iPhone SE (2022) $80 $100 -$20

Apple continues to accept trade-ins for older models, including the 2017 iPhone 8 and iPhone X, with values now ranging from $220 for an iPhone 12 Pro Max to $40 for an iPhone 8. These values have all decreased between $20 and $60, except for the iPhone X and 2020 iPhone SE, which remain unchanged.

Other Trade-in Values

The adjustments in pricing not only impact iPhones but also extend to the iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac devices, with one legacy model now essentially worthless.

While the maximum trade-in values for MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models have only decreased by $10, the 12-inch MacBook, last sold in 2019, is no longer eligible for trade-in (although Apple may still recycle it for you).

Apple’s desktop Macs have seen more significant drops, with the iMac, iMac Pro, and Mac Studio losing over $100 in trade-in value, while the Mac mini’s value has decreased by $15.

In a surprising turn of events, the Mac Pro now boasts a maximum trade-in value of $2,520, a substantial increase from its previous $550 value. This change may be due to Apple considering higher-end configurations, as the 2019 Intel model’s maxed-out configuration could cost up to $52,000, including the $400 wheels.

Trade-in values for Apple Watch and iPad have also been adjusted, albeit more moderately. The original 2022 Apple Watch Ultra has decreased by $10 to $245, while last year’s Apple Watch Series 10 has seen the most significant drop, from $175 to $160. Other models have decreased by $5, except for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and second-generation Apple Watch SE, which remain unchanged.

The trade-in value for the iPad Pro remains the same, while the iPad Air has actually increased by $15, from $400 to $415. The standard iPad has decreased by $15, and the iPad mini by $20.

It’s important to note that these are maximum trade-in values, and Apple hasn’t provided specific values for iPads and Macs. For instance, a base-model 2020 M1 MacBook Pro in mint condition may only fetch $300. However, higher-end configurations could exceed these maximum values; for example, a late 2024 M4 Pro MacBook Pro was quoted at $1,035 by Apple.

These changes come at a time when trade-ins see a surge during the holiday season as users upgrade their devices. While the reduced payouts may be disappointing, Apple’s trade-in offers are still competitive in the industry, especially for newer devices in good condition.

If the revised trade-in prices make you reconsider upgrading, there are alternative ways to extract value from your old hardware. Keeping an older iPhone as a dedicated camera, media player, or smart home controller is one option, among others detailed in our article on 10 Ways to Make the Most of Your Old Apple Devices.
