Apple TV Rebranding: Just Do It
Insight into Apple TV’s Rebranding Decision
In a recent interview on The Town podcast, Apple’s senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, shed light on the decision to rebrand Apple TV Plus to simply Apple TV. Cue revealed that the move was a collective decision within the company, with no external consultants involved. The reason behind dropping the “Plus” from the streaming service’s name was the widespread use of “Apple TV” by consumers.
The Role of “Plus” in Apple’s Service Naming
Initially, the inclusion of “Plus” in the name was to differentiate the paid versions of Apple’s free services like iCloud Plus and News Plus. Despite this, Cue emphasized that the internal consensus favored simplifying the name to align with common usage. “Given where we are today, it’s a great time to do it, so let’s just do it,” Cue explained.
Addressing Potential Confusion
Some concerns were raised about potential confusion between the streaming service, Apple TV hardware, and the Apple TV app post-rebrand. Cue, however, dismissed these worries by clarifying the distinct naming conventions. “Our hardware is called Apple TV 4K for your TV. I think that’s fine, and the app is called Apple TV,” Cue reassured. He also pointed out that the term “Apple TV” has been consistently used across Apple’s products and third-party devices.
