The durability of iPhone software has always been a point of envy for Android enthusiasts. Apple has consistently provided iOS updates for its iPhones for a minimum of five years, even during a time when other devices struggled to receive just one or two updates.

It is evident that Apple’s competitors have caught up, with Google and Samsung now pledging up to seven years of software updates and security patches, particularly for their flagship models. While Apple does not explicitly outline specific timelines for iPhone updates, its track record speaks for itself. The iPhone 11, which was initially launched with iOS 13 in 2019, can still be upgraded to iOS 26. This means that the device has received six major software updates, as iOS 26 succeeded iOS 18 when Apple transitioned to a new year-based numbering system for consistency across all its operating systems.

Apple’s commitment extends beyond major version updates to encompass security patches. In September of last year, Apple released iOS 15.8.5, a minor maintenance update with security fixes for older iPhones that are no longer eligible for further updates, including the 2015 iPhone 6s.

Recently, Apple set a new support record by releasing iOS 12.5.8 for the iPhone 5s, breaking its own previous milestone. This software update is remarkable as it revitalizes an iPhone model that was introduced over 12 years ago and is now entering its 13th year of operational life, despite being discontinued for almost nine years.

The same update is also applicable to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, although their lifespan has not been significantly extended. Launched in 2014, these models were mostly phased out by September 2016, with the exception of a single 32 GB “budget” variant that remained available in select foreign markets until 2018.

Both iPhone models have been listed as obsolete products by Apple for several years. The last iOS 12 update was released over three years ago, specifically on January 23, 2023. At that time, iPhones running iOS 12 were already considered vintage and were nearing the seven-year threshold before being classified as “obsolete.” The release of iOS 12.5.7 addressed a critical WebKit vulnerability that was actively exploited.

The recent release of iOS 12.5.8 is not solely focused on security patches but also ensures that users of the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus can continue utilizing iMessage and FaceTime. The update enhances encryption certificates required for these services to function beyond January 2027.

iOS 12.5.8 is also accessible for the iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and sixth-generation iPod touch. While Apple categorizes it as “iPadOS 12.5.8” on its security releases page, the divergence of iOS into iPadOS occurred the following year.

These updates are advantageous for individuals still using these older devices exclusively for messaging or FaceTime, countering claims of planned obsolescence by Apple to prompt users to upgrade to newer models.

Despite all these iOS 12 devices being designated as obsolete by Apple, the release of iOS 12.5.8 ensures that users won’t have to replace their old iPads or iPhones to stay connected with loved ones. This update allows individuals to continue using devices they may have passed on to their children or elderly family members for communication purposes.
