Apple to Launch iOS 17.4 with Major Update for EU Users

Apple is gearing up to release iOS 17.4 to the public next week, bringing a significant update for EU users. This update will allow third-party app stores among other changes. Regarding the adjustments necessary to comply with the DMA, Apple mentions the development of “over 600 new APIs and developer tools.”

Apple emphasizes that the safeguards implemented for app distribution apply universally, with iOS notarization being a significant update involving both automated and human reviews.

One of Apple’s concerns is the potential for new third-party app stores in the EU to become targets for malicious actors.

While developers in the App Store will soon have the option to use alternative payment methods for digital goods and services within their apps in the EU, users may not benefit from the same level of protection and convenience offered by Apple’s secure commerce system, including In-App Purchase (IAP) features.

Additional Measures for EU Users

• App Store product page labels will indicate when an app uses alternative payment processing.
• In-app disclosure sheets will inform users when they are no longer transacting with Apple and when a developer directs them to use an alternative payment processor.
• Expanded data portability on Apple’s Data & Privacy site will allow EU users to access and export new data about their App Store usage.
