‘The Last Frontier’ Frozen Out by Apple

Apple has created several popular Apple TV original series like Pluribus, Severance, and Ted Lasso. However, not all of their shows become hits, and it appears that Apple is now more inclined to cancel underperforming series compared to the early days of their streaming service.

One such example is The Last Frontier, a thriller that premiered in October with high expectations but failed to gain the traction Apple was hoping for. According to Variety, Apple has decided to cancel the series just two weeks after its first season finale aired on December 5.

Announced by Apple in early 2023, The Last Frontier featured Jason Clarke in the lead role of Frank Remnick, a US marshal who must deal with violent criminals who escape after a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness.

As the first season unfolds, Remnick starts to suspect that the crash may have been intentional, escalating the story from a simple town protection narrative to a complex web of political intrigue.

Unfortunately, the show did not live up to its initial promise. Despite an exciting trailer released on September 18, it received a disappointing 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics criticizing its lack of direction, wavering between a survivalist thriller and a political drama.

Even the strong cast, including Jason Clarke, Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, and Alfre Woodard, couldn’t save the show from its fate. The cancellation came as a surprise to the show’s creators, Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio, who were already brainstorming ideas for a second season.

Other Apple Original series like Constellation, Time Bandits, and The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin also failed to secure a second season, indicating a trend of cancellations for promising shows.

Despite the increasing number of cancellations, analysts suggest that Apple is willing to take risks with their TV productions, knowing that not every show will be a hit.

From the early days of Apple TV, shows like Little Voice and Mr. Corman have been canceled after one season, showcasing Apple’s willingness to experiment and make tough decisions in the competitive streaming landscape.
