The Future of Space Energy: Arinna’s Breakthrough Solar Technology

As the ambitions of both nations and billionaires expand into space, the need for reliable power sources becomes increasingly crucial. In response to this demand, a new startup founded by two Stanford PhDs may have the solution.

Arinna, led by CEO Koosha Nazif and CTO Alex Shearer, recently announced the successful raise of a $4 million seed round to develop ultrathin solar panels using a revolutionary new material derived from their doctoral research.

The funding, spearheaded by SpaceCadet Ventures with contributions from Anorak Capital and the Breakthrough Energy Foundation, marks a significant milestone for the company as it prepares to test its innovative products in orbit later this year. Arinna aims to establish a large-scale manufacturing facility by 2028 to produce these cutting-edge solar panels on a megawatt scale.

Shearer emphasized the importance of proving the efficiency and durability of their two-dimensional photovoltaics in space, highlighting the company’s commitment to refining their manufacturing processes for optimal performance.

Unlike traditional space solar panels made from rare earth elements or mass-manufactured silicon panels prone to degradation, Arinna’s technology is based on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), offering flexible and durable cells that are both cost-effective and long-lasting.

Ben Gaddy, a materials scientist and senior director at Breakthrough Energy, commended Arinna’s approach, noting the significant advancements made possible by their novel materials.

Nazif and Shearer’s collaboration at Stanford, combining expertise in material science and scalable production techniques, has paved the way for Arinna’s groundbreaking technology. Their photovoltaics offer superior flexibility, efficiency, and longevity compared to traditional panels, with the added benefits of simplified maintenance and rapid deployment.
