Aang is ready to continue his fight for peace and balance in the world, and now we know when the show is returning. Netflix has already announced the premiere date for the second season of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The anime on which the Netflix show is based has three seasons, so the live-action version of Avatar was expected to be an extensive project. However, Netflix is known for cancelling series that didn’t meet its expectations for viewer numbers, so the future of Avatar wasn’t assured.

It seems now that teenagers Aang, Katara and Sokka will again set out on a dangerous quest. We expect the heroes to be accompanied by the furry, flying bison, Appa, and the winged lemur, Momo.

The Netflix series derives from Avatar: The Last Airbender (also known as Avatar: The Legend of Aang), which is widely considered one of the best animated series of all time.

In this fantasy world, characters can control and manipulate one of the four elements – water, earth, fire, or air – by ‘bending’ them telekinetically. However, only the Avatar can master all four.

The first season of the live-action show covers the events from Book One: Water, anime season 1. Siblings Katara and Sokka found Avatar Aang and set off with him to the Northern Water Tribe. However, they were followed by envoys of the Fire Nation, including the exiled Prince Zuko and the cynical Admiral Zhao.

In the season finale, the Water Tribe clashed with the Fire Nation’s fleet at the North Pole. Although Aang and the water benders managed to repel the attack, the Tribe suffered heavy losses.

The creators included a preview of the new season in the mid-credit scenes. In his city, Fire Lord Ozai learns that a Sozin’s Comet will soon appear in the sky, from which the fire benders can draw power to enhance their skills. Ozai plans to use this moment to destroy the Avatar and conquer the world. It also turns out that during the battle at the North Pole, the Azula-led army captured the capital of the Earth Kingdom.

Viewers should prepare for a time jump between seasons 1 and 2. The child actors playing in the series have grown, and the series creators needed to explain the changes in their appearance.

We should see the introduction of earth bender Toph, a blind girl who becomes a permanent fixture in the group. Plus, the group may also visit Ba Sing Se, the Earth kingdom capital, which places its citizens into ‘rings’, based on their class.

The rulers attempt to maintain a sense of peace in the city, sometimes to the point of denying outside threats.

The Team Behind Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2

Initially, the original creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, were set to be part of the production as producers and showrunners. However, they departed the project in 2020.

In 2021, Netflix revealed the new creative team for the series. Albert Kim leads as showrunner and executive producer, with Dan Lin, Roseanne Liang, Lindsey Liberatore, and Michael Goi serving as co-executive producers. Takeshi Furukawa composed the score for the show.

Albert Kim has stepped down as showrunner for season 2, with Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani taking over the project.

The filming for the third season has concluded, marking the final chapter of Netflix’s Avatar series. The release date is yet to be announced, but fans can anticipate its arrival, possibly in 2027.
