BMW Steyr Plant Launches Production of Cutting-Edge Electric Motors
BMW’s Steyr Engine Plant Embraces Electrification
The engine plant of BMW in Steyr, Austria, has taken a significant step towards electrification. Following the successful launch of the iX3’s electric motor production earlier this year, the facility has now initiated pre-series production on a second assembly line dedicated to high-performance e-motors.
The latest press release by the company refrains from mentioning any specific future models, but the timing and details strongly suggest that the new powertrain is intended for the first-ever electric BMW M3. This car will mark BMW M’s full foray into the high-performance electric vehicle segment, with an X3 M model expected to follow suit.
The Second Line: Performance and Flexibility
The new production line in Steyr is designed to accommodate multiple electric drivetrains, including M-specific systems. Plant Director Klaus von Moltke emphasized the increased capacity and flexibility provided by the second line, stating that it aligns with the standards set for combustion engines.
This dual-line structure allows BMW to manufacture standard and performance-oriented e-motors simultaneously, a crucial step as BMW M gears up for the electric vehicle market.
In late October, BMW completed the production of its first high-performance electric motor on the new line. The company confirmed that prototype testing is underway, focusing on response, agility, and precision alongside raw power output.
Quad Motors For The Electric M3
Although technical specifications have not been disclosed, M CEO Frank Van Meel hinted at a four-motor setup for the upcoming M3 ZA0, with one motor per wheel and full torque vectoring capabilities. This configuration allows precise control of traction and cornering forces, enhancing performance compared to traditional combustion engines.
Reports suggest that BMW M is targeting an output of 800-900 horsepower for the new M3, a significant increase over the current model. The focus remains on balance and controllability rather than sheer power, aligning with the brand’s philosophy of building precise and dynamic vehicles.
Significant Investment for Future Development
BMW has invested over €500 million in machinery and equipment for the two new motor production lines, with a total investment of over €1 billion for electromobility development in Steyr from 2022 to 2030. This positions the plant as a key hub for electric propulsion systems, marking a shift from its traditional focus on internal combustion powertrains.
