Brands Chatting with ChatGPT: The Future of Advertising
OpenAI has recently rolled out an advertising pilot within ChatGPT, shedding light on the potential products that could be featured within conversations with the AI chatbot. Various companies, including major retailers like Target and automakers such as Ford and Mazda, have disclosed their intentions to display ads in ChatGPT, with placements that come at a significant cost.
Target has revealed its plans to utilize ads in ChatGPT to assist users in discovering products, deals, and inspiration that align with their current interests. These ads will be triggered based on keywords present in a user’s ChatGPT prompt. For example, if a user is searching for “countertop cooking appliances that make everyday meals more convenient,” they may come across an ad for an air fryer from Target.
Adobe is also set to showcase ads for its AI-powered document editor, Acrobat Studio, and its AI video and image generator, Adobe Firefly, in ChatGPT. The collaboration is framed as an opportunity to gain insights into how ads can offer valuable and relevant experiences as Adobe enhances its platform for advertisers to appear in AI search results.
Additionally, Williams-Sonoma will be featuring ads for its array of housewares, kitchenware, furniture, and other products in ChatGPT. The company aims to explore how ads in ChatGPT can highlight relevant, high-quality products during key decision-making moments.
Not only tangible products but also services will be promoted through ChatGPT, including audiobooks from Audible, an Amazon-owned platform. Audible intends to leverage ChatGPT to attract new audiobook enthusiasts, although the specifics of the ads, whether for subscriptions or specific audiobooks, remain undisclosed.
HelloFresh, a meal kit company, is another entity introducing ads to ChatGPT. Patrick Stal, the company’s senior vice president of global marketing, views this partnership as a means to offer solutions to customers utilizing ChatGPT for activities like meal planning.
Furthermore, advertising agency WPP Media is collaborating with Ford, Mazda, cleaning company Mrs. Myers, and luxury watch brand Audemars Piguet to launch ads in ChatGPT. Other agencies such as Dentsu and Omnicom have also announced plans to bring their clients’ ads to ChatGPT, spanning various industries like grocery, hospitality, retail, software, travel, and consumer packaged goods (CPG).
Dentsu and Omnicom mention the participation of several clients across diverse sectors, including food and beverages, cosmetics, cleaning products, apparel, automotive, beauty, technology, telecommunications, hospitality, retail, and fast-food in OpenAI’s test with ChatGPT.
In an update on February 11th, HelloFresh was added to the list of companies incorporating ads in ChatGPT.
