BYD-powered KGM Torres Hybrid will take on Toyota RAV4 in Australia

KGM to Launch Torres Hybrid SUV in Australia by End of 2025

KGM, formerly known as SsangYong, has officially announced the upcoming release of the new Torres Hybrid mid-size SUV in the Australian market by the end of 2025. The company plans to offer this new model at a competitive price point of under $50,000.

This addition will expand KGM’s current Torres lineup, which debuted in Australia in 2024 with three variants powered by a single petrol engine. The new Torres Hybrid is set to compete with popular medium SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, and Mazda CX-5.

Recently launched in the UK, the Torres Hybrid features a two-motor petrol-electric system developed by Chinese automaker BYD.

While the UK model is priced at £35,995 ($A73,812), making it more affordable than the petrol version, KGM plans to introduce two variants in Australia priced below $50,000.

The Torres Hybrid in the UK generates 130kW of power and 300Nm of torque from a BYD-developed powertrain, including a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, six-speed transmission, and two electric motors.

Equipped with nine driving modes, including EV-only mode and HEV mode, the Torres Hybrid offers impressive performance capabilities.

The hybrid SUV provides electric-only functionality at speeds up to 100km/h, with a claimed combined fuel efficiency of 6.1L/100km.

In comparison to the petrol Torres, the hybrid model offers competitive fuel efficiency and performance.

Both the petrol and hybrid versions of the Torres offer a spacious cargo area of 703 litres, expandable to 1662L with the rear seats folded down.

Safety features in the UK model include 20-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, digital instrument cluster, and advanced driver-assist technologies.
