Chaos in Cybersecurity: Microsoft Defender Portal Outage Disrupts Threat Hunting Operations
Microsoft Works to Address Defender XDR Portal Outage
Microsoft is currently working diligently to resolve an ongoing incident that has been impacting access to certain Defender XDR portal features for the past 10 hours. This incident has caused disruptions for customers attempting to utilize functionalities within the Defender portal, as reported in an admin center service alert (DZ1191468) by BleepingComputer.
The root cause of these issues, as identified by Microsoft, is a sudden surge in traffic leading to high CPU utilization on components essential for Microsoft Defender portal operations. This spike in traffic has resulted in a significant impact on user access and usage of the portal.
Upon recognizing the outage at 06:10 UTC, Microsoft promptly classified it as an incident, indicating its severity and the noticeable impact on users. Subsequent to this acknowledgment, Microsoft has implemented mitigation measures to address the impact and enhance processing throughput.
Recent telemetry data suggests that availability has been restored for some affected customers, with Microsoft actively working to resolve the remaining issues. The company is currently analyzing HTTP Archive (HAR) traces provided by impacted customers to gain further insights and address the ongoing challenges.
Despite progress in resolving the outage, certain functionalities within the affected portal, such as advanced threat-hunting alerts and device visibility, continue to be affected. Microsoft is collaborating closely with a select group of organizations still experiencing issues to collect additional diagnostics and traces for a comprehensive investigation.
The company remains committed to resolving the situation swiftly and efficiently, ensuring minimal disruption for customers. Ongoing monitoring and collaboration with impacted organizations are key components of Microsoft’s approach to resolving this incident.
This is an evolving situation, and Microsoft will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses and solutions are implemented.
