Comparing the iPhone 17E to Apple’s Premium Models: Is it Worth the Price Difference?
Introducing the iPhone 17E: A Closer Look at Apple’s New Budget Option
The iPhone 17 lineup has expanded with the addition of the “budget” option, the iPhone 17E. Set to hit stores on Wednesday, March 11th, with preorders opening on March 4th, the iPhone 17E offers a more affordable entry point starting at $599. This 6.1-inch phone joins Apple’s existing iPhone 17 lineup, which includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air, catering to a wide range of users with varying needs and preferences.
One of the standout features of the iPhone 17E is its support for MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging, a significant upgrade from its predecessor, the iPhone 16E. It is powered by the faster A19 chip, offers twice the base storage at 256GB, and boasts a sharper and more durable display. Additionally, the iPhone 17E retains support for Apple Intelligence and features a 48-megapixel “fusion” camera that enables 2x telephoto shots, bringing it closer in capabilities to Apple’s higher-end models.
Despite its more accessible price point, the iPhone 17E does come with some trade-offs compared to the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup. It features a 6.1-inch 60Hz display, which is smaller than the displays on the other models, and lacks certain premium features like an always-on display and Dynamic Island. The peak brightness of the display is also slightly lower at 1,200 nits.
When it comes to camera hardware, the iPhone 17E shares a 48-megapixel main sensor with the iPhone Air and standard iPhone 17. However, the iPhone 17 differentiates itself with a dedicated ultrawide camera that also enables macro photography. The Pro models further enhance the camera capabilities with additional dedicated telephoto cameras and the Camera Control button for quick access to various settings.
Charging speeds and battery life vary across the iPhone 17 lineup. The iPhone 17E supports MagSafe charging with Qi2 support, allowing for wireless charging at up to 15W. In comparison, the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and Pro models support faster wireless charging speeds. Battery life also improves as you move up the lineup, with the iPhone 17E rated for up to 26 hours of video playback.
