Consumer Reports asks Microsoft to keep supporting Windows 10

Consumer Reports Urges Microsoft to Extend Windows 10 Security Update Deadline

In a recent development, Consumer Reports has called on Microsoft to reconsider its decision to cut off free security updates for Windows 10 computers by the looming October 14th deadline. The consumer advocacy organization has sent a letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, expressing concerns that millions of consumers will be left vulnerable due to their machines being incompatible with the newer Windows 11 operating system.

According to Consumer Reports, data shows that a significant 46.2 percent of global users are still reliant on Windows 10 as of August 2025. Furthermore, an estimated 200 to 400 million PCs are unable to upgrade to Windows 11 due to lacking the necessary hardware specifications.

The letter from Consumer Reports accuses Microsoft of being “hypocritical” for pushing customers to switch to Windows 11 for enhanced cybersecurity while neglecting the security of Windows 10 devices. It criticizes Microsoft’s $30 fee for a one-year security extension and the limitations of free support options that seemingly force users to stick with Microsoft products to maintain security.

In response, Consumer Reports has requested that Microsoft continue offering free support for Windows 10 computers until a larger number of users have migrated to Windows 11. A Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) has also joined the call for an extended deadline, highlighting the potential waste of up to 400 million functional computers that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11.
