Judge orders Perplexity to stop AI agents from shopping on Amazon

Federal Judge Blocks Perplexity’s AI Agents from Placing Amazon Orders

In recent news, a federal judge has issued a significant order preventing Perplexity’s web browser-based AI agents from making Amazon orders on behalf of users. This decision comes after Amazon presented compelling evidence that Perplexity’s Comet browser was accessing user accounts without authorization from the retail giant, as reported by Bloomberg.

The legal battle between Amazon and Perplexity began when Amazon filed a lawsuit in November, accusing the AI startup of allowing its agents to purchase products for customers despite repeated requests to cease this activity. Amazon alleged that Perplexity’s Comet browser was intruding into its marketplace and user accounts, violating computer fraud and abuse laws. Additionally, Amazon claimed that Perplexity attempted to disguise Comet as Google Chrome to conceal its actions.

As a result of the ruling, Perplexity is prohibited from accessing Amazon using its AI agents and must delete any data obtained from the platform. The preliminary injunction will come into effect in seven days, allowing Perplexity time to appeal the decision.

In response to the ruling, Amazon spokesperson Lara Hendrickson stated that the decision would prevent Perplexity’s unauthorized access to the Amazon store. Amazon is committed to presenting its case in court. On the other hand, Perplexity’s spokesperson, Jesse Dwyer, affirmed that the startup would continue to advocate for internet users’ right to choose their preferred AI technologies.

Update, March 10th: Amazon’s statement has been added.
