AirPods’ best features come to Android and Linux with free app

Unlocking Enhanced Features with LibrePods

One remarkable innovation in the world of wireless headphones is LibrePods, which has been developed through reverse engineering the AirPods’ proprietary protocols. By tricking the headphones into thinking they are connected to an Apple device, LibrePods enable the sharing of device status information that is usually exclusive to Apple’s operating systems. These enhanced features include conversational awareness to lower volume during speech, seamless switching between noise control modes, precise battery level monitoring, personalized settings such as accessibility options and headphone renaming, a hearing aid mode, and the ability to connect to multiple devices simultaneously.

Compatibility and Limitations

According to Devar, LibrePods is expected to be compatible with all AirPods models. While full functionality is achieved with the AirPods Max and the latest AirPods Pro versions, it is important to note that the heart rate monitoring feature of the AirPods Pro 3 is not supported.

Installation on Android Devices

While LibrePods offers a range of exciting features, setting it up on an Android device is not as straightforward as installing an app. Devar highlights that due to an issue with the Android Bluetooth stack, LibrePods is currently only compatible with rooted Android phones that have the Xposed framework installed. Users of OnePlus or Oppo devices running ColorOS or OxygenOS 16 can use LibrePods without rooting, but certain features like customizing the transparency mode may not be accessible until rooting is performed.
