Jaguar Land Rover Cyberattack: A Costly Blow to the Automotive Giant

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) recently disclosed its financial results for the period of July 1 to September 30, revealing the staggering impact of a cyberattack that cost the company £196 million ($220 million) in the quarter.

The cyberattack, which was reported on September 2, 2025, resulted in the shutdown of production at JLR’s key plants and forced employees to go home. Subsequent investigations confirmed that data had been compromised during the attack, which was claimed by the cybercrime group Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters on Telegram.

The repercussions of the cyberattack extended for weeks, straining JLR’s financial standing and market position while also posing liquidity challenges for the company and some of its suppliers.

On September 29, 2025, the UK Government intervened to rescue JLR from its precarious situation by approving a £1.5 billion loan guarantee to facilitate the restoration of its supply chain and expedite the resumption of production.

Production operations resumed by October 8, 2025, following a phased approach.

Based on the newly released financial figures by JLR, the cyberattack not only disrupted production and sales but also significantly impacted the company’s profits.

“Loss before tax and exceptional items stood at £(485)m for Q2 and £(134)m for H1, a sharp decline from a profit of £398m and £1.1bn respectively in the previous year,” the company revealed.

“The EBIT margin for the second quarter plummeted to (8.6)% from 5.1% a year ago, and to (1.4)% for H1 from 7.1% in the previous year.”

“The decline in profitability can be largely attributed to the cyber incident, ongoing US tariffs, reduced volumes, and increased VME.”

In its recent Monetary Policy Report, the Bank of England highlighted that the country’s GDP underperformed in Q3 2025, citing the cyberattack at Jaguar Land Rover as a prominent factor.

Despite the challenges, JLR affirmed that its operations have stabilized, with wholesale, parts logistics, and supplier financing fully restored.

The company emphasized that despite the disruptions, investment spending has remained intact and is projected to remain at £18 billion over the next five years starting from FY24.
