Developers’ skepticism: AI code still requires human oversight, BairesDev survey finds
Major Shift in Software Development: Embracing Artificial Intelligence
Software developers are gearing up for a significant transformation in their work processes as artificial intelligence (AI) takes center stage in their workflows. According to the latest BairesDev Dev Barometer report released today, senior developers are anticipating a shift in their roles due to AI by 2026. The report, which surveyed 501 developers and 19 project managers across 92 software initiatives, reveals that 65% of senior developers expect AI to redefine their roles in the coming years.
The survey data indicates a shift in software development practices, with a decrease in routine coding tasks, a greater focus on design and strategy, and an increasing demand for AI proficiency.
Evolution from Coders to Strategists
Of those developers expecting changes, 74% foresee transitioning from hands-on coding to designing solutions. Additionally, 61% plan to incorporate AI-generated code into their workflows, and half anticipate dedicating more time to system strategy and architecture.
Chief Technology Officer at BairesDev, Justice Erolin, highlighted this shift, stating that developers are moving from being individual contributors to system thinkers. He emphasized that AI is streamlining tasks like code scaffolding and unit test generation, allowing developers more time for strategic work.
Erolin noted that BairesDev’s internal data aligns with these findings, revealing that senior engineers equipped with AI tools are surpassing traditional team setups.
Understanding AI’s Limits
Despite the optimism surrounding AI, developers remain cautious about its reliability. While 56% view AI-generated code as somewhat reliable, only 9% trust it enough to use without human oversight. Erolin emphasized the importance of human oversight in conjunction with AI tools, acknowledging that developers must comprehend how individual components fit into larger systems.
Looking ahead to 2025, Erolin identified a pivotal moment for engineers utilizing AI tools, emphasizing the impact of these tools on learning, productivity, and oversight.
Upskilling with AI Integration
By 2025, AI integration had already delivered tangible benefits to developers, with 74% reporting strengthened technical skills, 50% experiencing improved work-life balance, and 37% citing expanded career opportunities. Erolin highlighted AI as a key tool for upskilling, enabling developers to learn new technologies efficiently.
However, Erolin cautioned about the potential long-term consequences of replacing junior engineers, which could lead to a shortage of qualified professionals in the future. The Dev Barometer findings echoed these concerns, indicating a possible talent pipeline issue due to fewer entry-level opportunities.
Leaner Teams and New Priorities
Developers anticipate smaller, specialized teams in 2026, with automation streamlining entry-level tasks and creating new career paths. The report highlighted the fastest-growing areas for the upcoming year, including AI/ML, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Project managers also emphasized the need for developers to receive additional training in AI, cloud computing, and security.
Erolin described the future generation of developers as “T-shaped engineers,” individuals with broad system knowledge and deep expertise in specific areas. He emphasized the importance of developers who possess both technical fluency and strategic thinking skills.
AI as the New Standard
The Q4 Dev Barometer positions AI as a foundational element of software development in 2026. Developers are moving beyond using AI as a mere coding tool and integrating it into various aspects of development, including architecture, validation, and design decisions.
Erolin highlighted BairesDev’s adaptation to this new reality, emphasizing the company’s commitment to providing highly skilled engineers aligned with client needs. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between developers and AI for enhanced productivity and creativity.
