The UK Government’s Investment in Terrestrial Timing Technology

The UK Government has recently made a significant investment in new terrestrial timing technology to reduce dependence on satellite systems for crucial digital infrastructure such as mobile phone networks and online banking.

One of the key components of this investment is the establishment of the cutting-edge National Timing Centre (NTC), which will play a vital role in enhancing the protection of clocks and timing systems that are integral to our daily lives.

As part of a new £180m program aimed at strengthening UK resilience and safeguarding the economy, the NTC’s launch coincides with the commencement of British Science Week.

According to Science Minister Lord Vallance, accurate timekeeping is essential for the smooth functioning of various sectors, from banking and communication to emergency services.

Challenges of Traditional Timing Systems

Accurate timekeeping is crucial for the operation of transport systems, communication networks, and emergency services. Currently, these systems heavily rely on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for precise timing signals.

However, recent events, including disruptions caused by conflicts like the war in Ukraine, have highlighted the vulnerabilities of satellite-based timing systems to attacks, jamming, and technical issues.

Notably, an outage affecting the UK could result in an economic loss of approximately £1.4bn within just 24 hours.

Enhancing Resilience with the National Timing Centre

Led by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the National Timing Centre aims to develop an alternative to satellite-based timing technology to ensure the continuity of the economy, public services, and transport networks even in the face of severe disruptions.

The NTC will provide a resilient timing signal through various mediums, including the internet, fiber optics, and satellites, reducing dependence on vulnerable single-location systems.

NPL’s CEO, Pete Thompson, emphasized the importance of the NTC program in protecting and enhancing the UK’s digital infrastructure, while also fostering innovation in various sectors.

Advancing Precision Timing Training

In addition to enhancing technological capabilities, the funding will support the development of expertise in precision timing training in the UK. This initiative will create opportunities for graduates, apprentices, and future PhD-level professionals, ensuring a skilled workforce to maintain secure and reliable timekeeping.

Celebrating Scientific Achievements during British Science Week

The investment in terrestrial timing technology is a significant highlight of British Science Week, a platform for celebrating advancements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the UK.

Furthermore, Science and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall will acknowledge the contributions of women to British science at the Royal Society’s ‘Women and the Future of Science’ event, showcasing the diverse talent driving innovation in the country.
