Anthropic’s Claude Code Update Exposes Source Code Leak
Following the release of Anthropic’s Claude Code 2.1.88 update, users were quick to uncover a source map file containing the TypeScript codebase. A user on X raised the alarm about the leak, sharing a file with the code. The leaked data reportedly comprises over 512,000 lines of code, offering a peek into the inner workings of the AI-powered coding tool, as detailed by Ars Technica and VentureBeat.
Despite Anthropic addressing the issue later on, users proceeded to replicate the code in a GitHub repository, amassing over 50,000 forks. Claude Code, introduced by Anthropic in February 2025, gained momentum post the addition of agentic capabilities for automated tasks.
Anthropic spokesperson Christopher Nulty clarified in an email to The Verge that the Claude Code release with internal source code did not involve or expose any sensitive customer data or credentials. The incident was attributed to a packaging error during release, not a security breach. Anthropic is implementing measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Gartner’s AI analyst, Arun Chandrasekaran, mentioned to The Verge that while the Claude Code leak presents risks like potential avenues for malicious actors to bypass security measures, its lasting impact might prompt Anthropic to enhance operational processes and tools for improved maturity.
