Ferrari 250 GTO auctioned for $38.5 million; fails to beat 2018 record

The Ferrari 250 GTO at Mecum Auctions: A Closer Look

When news broke that a Ferrari 250 GTO would be up for grabs at the Kissimmee event hosted by Mecum Auctions, enthusiasts held their breath in anticipation of a potential record-breaking sale. However, the outcome was surprising, with the final price for the rare white 250 GTO 3729GT fetching $38.5 million. This figure fell significantly short of the previous record of $70 million set by David MacNeil in 2018.

The auctioned 250 GTO, painted in the unique Bianco color from the factory, failed to surpass the $50 million mark for several reasons. Despite its rarity as the only example in this color, the car has undergone multiple alterations over the years and no longer retains its original engine.

Originally delivered to John Coombs in England in 1962, ‘The Bianco Speciale’ made its mark in various prestigious events until its last international competition appearance in 1964.

While expectations were high for another groundbreaking auction sale, the $38.5 million price tag for the Ferrari 250 GTO at Mecum Auctions fell short of previous records. The unique Bianco-painted 250 GTO 3729GT failed to surpass the $50 million mark, largely due to its extensive modifications and the absence of its original engine.

Delivered to John Coombs in England in 1962, ‘The Bianco Speciale’ had a storied history in elite events before bowing out of international competition in 1964.
