Disconnected: Netflix’s Deadly Casting
Netflix Removes Casting Support for Mobile Devices
In a recent update, Netflix has discontinued the ability to cast shows and movies from mobile phones to TVs for most subscribers. The changes were first noticed on a help page on Netflix’s website and have since been confirmed by users.
Sudden Removal of Casting Feature Causes Confusion
The removal of casting support appears to have taken many users by surprise, with reports of the feature disappearing without warning. Users are now being directed to use the remote controls that came with their TV hardware to navigate Netflix.
Limited Casting Support for Older Devices
While casting support is still available for older Chromecast devices and TVs that support Google Cast, only subscribers on higher-priced ad-free plans can utilize this feature. Subscribers on the ad-supported plan will no longer be able to cast from their phones.
Netflix’s History of Feature Removal
This recent move by Netflix to remove casting support follows a similar decision in 2019 when AirPlay support was discontinued. Netflix cited a commitment to maintaining a high standard of viewing quality as the reason for these changes.
