Sony and Honda Cancel Afeela 1 Sedan and SUV Production

Sony and Honda have announced the cancellation of the Afeela 1 sedan and its accompanying SUV, which were originally scheduled to start production this year and in 2028, respectively. This decision comes as a result of a downturn in the electric vehicle (EV) market in the United States, compounded by Honda’s recent cancellation of three EV models planned for production in Ohio.

In a joint statement, Sony and Honda stated that the cancellation of the Honda 0 Saloon, 0 SUV, and Acura RSX has had a significant impact on the underlying assumptions of Sony Honda Mobility’s business model, particularly in terms of the technologies and assets sourced from Honda.

Despite the cancellation of the Afeela 1 sedan and SUV, Sony Honda Mobility, the joint venture responsible for designing, engineering, and selling Afeela-branded EVs, remains operational for the time being.

According to the companies, Sony and Honda will reassess Sony Honda Mobility’s business direction and announce its mid- to long-term positioning at the earliest opportunity.

Following the reduction in EV sales after the discontinuation of the $7500 federal tax credit for EVs in September 2025, Sony Honda Mobility may need to shift its focus to the Chinese market or reconsider its EV-exclusive strategy to sustain its operations.

Sony first hinted at entering the automotive industry when it unveiled the Vision-S EV concept at CES 2020. After further development, Sony partnered with Honda to collaborate on engineering and producing EVs under the Afeela brand.

Reevaluation and Future Plans

The Afeela 1 sedan, showcased in near-production form in 2025, was slated for production later this year at Honda’s East Liberty plant, located close to the now-canceled production site for the Honda 0 Series EVs in Marysville.

The sedan, measuring 4915mm in length, boasted a 360kW dual-motor all-wheel drive system and a 91kWh lithium-ion battery, offering an estimated range of 483km based on EPA testing. It also supported DC fast charging up to 150kW, with a starting price of $89,900.

At CES 2026, Afeela unveiled a concept for an SUV, intended for production in 2028.

Despite the setbacks, Sony Honda Mobility’s future plans and strategies are under review, with a focus on adapting to changing market conditions and consumer demands.
