Discord customer service data breach leaks user info and scanned photo IDs

Discord’s Third-Party Customer Service Provider Compromised

Discord recently revealed that one of its third-party customer service providers fell victim to a security breach by an unauthorized party. The breach resulted in the unauthorized access to information of a limited number of users who had interacted with Discord’s Customer Support and Trust & Safety teams. The motive behind the breach was an attempt to extort a financial ransom from Discord. It’s important to note that the unauthorized party did not directly breach Discord’s systems.

Data Potentially Accessed

The compromised data may include names, usernames, emails, and the last four digits of credit card numbers. Additionally, a small number of images of government IDs from users who had appealed an age determination were accessed. Discord assures users that full credit card numbers and passwords were not impacted by the breach.

Actions Taken by Discord

Discord is actively notifying affected users via email, particularly those whose IDs may have been compromised. The company has revoked the support provider’s access to Discord’s ticketing system, informed data protection authorities, collaborated with law enforcement agencies, and conducted a thorough review of their threat detection systems and security controls concerning third-party support providers.
