Drama and Dollars: The Evolution of Soap Opera-TikTok Hybrids
New Trend Alert: The Rise of Micro Dramas in the Mobile App Industry
In recent years, a lucrative trend has emerged in the mobile app market, known as “micro dramas.” These are short, scripted shows specifically designed to be viewed vertically on smartphones. Combining elements of soap operas with the addictive nature of TikTok, micro dramas feature intriguing storylines like secret billionaire romances, werewolf in-laws, and cliffhangers that keep viewers tapping for more. The leading app in this genre, ReelShort, raked in an impressive $1.2 billion in consumer spending last year.
On a recent episode of TechCrunch’s Equity podcast, hosts Rebecca Bellan and senior reporter Amanda Silberling sat down with Henry Soong, the founder of Watch Club. Soong believes that the micro drama industry is still in its “MySpace era” and envisions a future where it reaches the same level of success as Facebook.
