Empowering Businesses with COI Energy: Turning Unused Electricity into Profit – Unveiled at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025
The Inefficient Allocation System for Electricity in Large Enterprises
Large enterprises with multi-building campuses face an outdated system when it comes to supplying electricity. Unlike homeowners who pay for actual usage, campuses purchase a standard monthly capacity based on maximum usage needs. This means that even if the company rarely consumes this maximum capacity, they are still required to pay for it.
COI Energy’s founder and CEO, SaLisa Berrien, was deeply troubled by this situation. With a background in mechanical engineering and an MBA, she spent 25 years working as an energy engineer at major utility companies and clean energy startups.
Berrien’s motivation stemmed from personal experiences during her childhood when her family struggled to pay their electric bill. This led her to pursue a career in the energy sector to make electricity more efficient, affordable, and accessible, with the aim of ensuring no child goes without power.
Throughout her career, Berrien focused on customer operations, smart grids, and clean energy programs, striving to improve energy performance in buildings and eliminate production line bottlenecks.
Addressing the issue of companies reserving more energy than they actually use, Berrien developed a solution that led to the founding of COI Energy. The company’s innovative approach involves creating a marketplace where enterprises can sell excess energy allotments based on data predictions of their usage.
The Unique Solution Offered by COI Energy
COI Energy installs a patented energy gateway at customer sites to measure energy usage and predict future requirements. This data-driven approach allows companies to release unused energy capacity, which is then bought by other businesses through the COI marketplace.
While still in the pre-seed stage, COI Energy has raised funding from various investors and is already generating revenue through pilot programs with customers operating in multiple states.
Berrien’s commitment to social responsibility is evident in COI Energy’s pledge to donate a portion of the savings generated on their platform to nonprofit organizations that assist underprivileged individuals with their energy needs.
Looking Towards a Sustainable Future
COI Energy’s goal is to optimize energy systems by enabling companies to share excess capacity, thus contributing to a more sustainable planet. By leveraging technology and data analytics, COI is not only improving bottom lines but also uplifting communities and supporting those in need.
As COI Energy continues to grow and expand its reach, Berrien remains dedicated to making a positive impact on both the energy sector and society as a whole.
