SAP and Fresenius to build sovereign AI backbone for healthcare

SAP and Fresenius, two leading companies in the healthcare sector, have joined forces to develop a cutting-edge AI platform focused on ensuring secure data processing within clinical environments.

The implementation of AI in the medical field necessitates stringent governance measures, which are often lacking in public cloud solutions. This collaboration aims to bridge that gap by establishing a “controlled environment” where AI models can function without compromising data sovereignty.

Transitioning AI from experimental to operational

The primary objective of this project is to construct an open and integrated ecosystem that enables hospitals to utilize AI securely. Rather than conducting isolated experiments, the companies aspire to create a digital framework for a sovereign healthcare system supported by AI.

Michael Sen, the CEO of Fresenius, expressed, “Through our collaboration with SAP, we can expedite the digital transformation of healthcare systems in Germany and Europe, facilitating the establishment of a sovereign European solution crucial in today’s global landscape.”

“We are simplifying data and AI integration for healthcare professionals, ensuring security, scalability, and ease of use. This allows medical practitioners to focus on what truly matters – patient care.”

The technical foundation leverages SAP Business AI and the SAP Business Data Cloud to create a compliant and sovereign platform for deploying AI models in healthcare. This infrastructure ensures responsible handling of health data, a prerequisite for scaling automated processes in patient care.

The collaboration addresses data fragmentation through SAP’s “AnyEMR” strategy, which facilitates the integration of diverse hospital information systems (HIS). By utilizing industry standards like HL7 FHIR, the platform connects HIS, electronic medical records (EMRs), and other medical applications.

This connectivity empowers Fresenius to develop AI-driven solutions that enhance efficiency throughout the care continuum. The goal is to develop a scalable platform that fosters connected, data-driven healthcare processes.

Committing to sovereign AI for healthcare advancement

Both companies plan to invest a substantial amount in the medium term to digitally transform healthcare systems in Germany and Europe using AI solutions. The investment will encompass support for startups and scaleups, in addition to internal technological advancements, aimed at expanding the range of tools compatible with the sovereign platform.

Christian Klein, the CEO of SAP SE, remarked, “By combining SAP’s leading technology with Fresenius’ profound healthcare expertise, we aim to establish a sovereign, interoperable healthcare platform for Fresenius globally.”

“Our goal is to set new benchmarks for data sovereignty, security, and innovation in healthcare. Through SAP’s technology, Fresenius can unlock the full potential of digital and AI-driven processes, ultimately enhancing patient care sustainably.”

This collaboration signals a shift towards a sovereign infrastructure in the next phase of healthcare AI in Europe. Sectors like healthcare demand a controlled environment to meet regulatory requirements – without a sovereign data backbone, AI initiatives could be hindered by compliance issues.
