End of an Era: Rec Room to Close its Doors on June 1st
Rec Room Announces Shutdown After 10 Years of Operation
Developer Rec Room has made the difficult decision to shut down its popular social and gaming title, Rec Room. The game, which allowed players to hang out, create games, and engage in both standard and VR modes, will be closing its doors on June 1st, coinciding with its 10th anniversary since launch. After this date, players will no longer have access to the game or its website. As of now, new accounts cannot be created, friends cannot be added, RR+ membership sign-ups are closed, the Room Rewards program has ended, and monetized items cannot be created.
In a heartfelt statement, the development team reflected on the incredible journey of Rec Room over the past decade. With over 150 million players and creators, the platform facilitated the creation of over half a billion friendships and amassed a total of 68 thousand years of playtime worldwide. Despite the immense popularity and community engagement, the team struggled to make Rec Room a sustainable and profitable business. Rising costs and challenges in the VR and gaming markets ultimately led to the decision to cease operations. The team emphasized the importance of winding down thoughtfully and honoring the contributions of those who helped build Rec Room.
“Even today, millions of people continue to enjoy the fun and welcoming environment of Rec Room each month. What this community achieved together is truly remarkable, and we will always be proud of it.”
As a gesture of gratitude to the players, the Rec Room team is offering an 80% discount on all first-party content and making some Rec Room+ items available to all players. Additionally, players can download their photos and final report cards. Instructions for downloading photos from the game are provided, as well as guidelines for obtaining the final report card. Creators will have the opportunity to download their room and invention data in formats compatible with tools like Unity. However, this process can only be completed through Steam, with the functionality set to go live next week. It is important to note that working copies of rooms cannot be downloaded as they require Rec Room servers to run.
