Gemini app on iPhone adds Control Center, lockscreen widgets

Google Gemini app on iPhone has received a significant update, introducing lockscreen widgets and direct access in Control Center. This update comes on the heels of a homescreen redesign from last week. The Gemini iPhone app now offers six circular lockscreen widgets for users to choose from.

The first widget, “Type prompt,” allows users to quickly type a question or prompt. The “Talk Live” widget enables users to talk things through or brainstorm aloud with Gemini. The “Open mic” widget allows users to open their microphone to set reminders, create calendar events, and more. Users can also use the “Use camera” widget to take a photo and ask Gemini about it, or choose the “Share image” widget to get more information, create new art, or start a chat. Lastly, the “Share file” widget allows users to share information or inspiration behind their question using a file.

The main shortcut opens the app and keyboard for users to start typing a prompt, while launching Gemini Live has been simplified to a direct process. The “Open mic” widget allows users to enter a text prompt via voice, and the “Use camera” widget launches the in-app camera. The last two widgets bring up the image or file pickers directly.

Users can also set any of the six shortcuts to appear as corner buttons on the lockscreen and in the Control Center for quick access without having to unlock their device. These shortcuts streamline the process of launching Gemini and should have been available from day one to match competing apps.

Version 1.2025.0762303 of the Gemini app is currently rolling out on the App Store. The release notes also mention recent launches, including the ability to share text, images, and links directly to Gemini from any app, the availability of Deep Research in Gemini Advanced, as well as UI improvements and bug fixes.

In addition, users can now add 9to5Google as a preferred source on Google. The app also includes an affiliate disclaimer, indicating the use of income earning auto affiliate links.

Overall, the update to the Gemini iPhone app brings new features and improvements to enhance the user experience.
