Enhanced Messaging Security: Microsoft Teams Takes the Lead in January
Microsoft Teams Enhances Messaging Security Features
Microsoft Teams is set to bolster its messaging security with the automatic activation of safety features to combat malicious content, the tech giant announced. This move aims to fortify defenses against potential threats and enhance user protection.
Commencing on January 12, 2026, this update will be rolled out to tenants who are still using the default configuration and have not made any previous modifications to their messaging safety settings.
According to a Microsoft 365 message center update, administrators were informed that key safety protections will be enabled by default in Microsoft Teams to improve messaging security. This update seeks to shield users from harmful content and provide options to report any inaccuracies in detections.
Microsoft emphasized that three critical security features would be activated through this update: weaponizable file type protection, malicious URL detection, and a mechanism for reporting false positives. Organizations that have previously customized these settings will not experience any alterations.
Once the messaging protections are in place, users may receive warning labels on messages containing suspicious URLs and have the ability to report any incorrect security detections. Messages with potentially harmful file types will be blocked entirely.
Administrators who wish to maintain their current settings are advised to review their Teams admin center configurations before the deadline in January. Organizations looking to implement different security parameters must make the necessary adjustments and save changes before January 12 to prevent automatic activation.
IT admins are urged to update internal documentation and communicate these changes to helpdesk staff. Teams administrators can assess current configurations by navigating to Messaging > Messaging settings > Messaging safety in the Teams admin center.
These updates align with Microsoft’s commitment to addressing cybersecurity risks, including a new feature that alerts admins about suspicious activities from external domains. Cybercriminals have been targeting Teams users through phishing attacks and malware campaigns.
In addition to these security enhancements, Microsoft recently introduced a feature in Teams that blocks screen-capture attempts during meetings. The company is also working on a new call handler to enhance the performance of the Teams desktop client on Windows 11 systems.
At the Enterprise Connect conference last year, Microsoft revealed that over 320 million individuals utilize its Teams platform for workplace collaboration on a monthly basis.
