Enhanced Privacy: Firefox’s Free VPN Offering 50GB Monthly Data Limit
Firefox Introduces Free Built-In VPN Feature with 50GB Monthly Data Limit
Recently, Mozilla unveiled Firefox 149, which includes a groundbreaking privacy enhancement in the form of a built-in VPN tool that offers users up to 50GB of monthly traffic. This new feature aims to provide added protection for users navigating the web.
Unlike Mozilla’s commercial VPN service, which covers system-wide traffic, this built-in VPN tool utilizes a secure proxy server to exclusively route traffic from the browser. This ensures a higher level of privacy and security for users.
According to Mozilla, the VPN feature is particularly beneficial for individuals using public Wi-Fi networks, conducting sensitive online activities, or shopping for personal items. By enabling this feature, users can easily conceal their location and IP address by routing their traffic through a secure proxy while browsing in Firefox.

Users with a Mozilla account will receive 50GB of traffic per month, with in-browser notifications alerting them as they approach the limit. The VPN feature can be easily activated through a toggle switch located in the top right corner of the browser interface. Additionally, users have the option to enable the VPN only on specific websites, up to five, in order to conserve traffic.
Some websites and essential services are excluded from VPN routing to prevent account sign-in issues and ensure smooth VPN reconnection. Mozilla has reassured users that only technical data necessary for maintaining service performance and stability, as well as interaction data for usage analysis, will be collected.
Notably, the routing server for the VPN is based in the U.S. and is selected based on considerations of location and performance to provide users with the best possible experience. The rollout of the built-in VPN feature will begin in the U.S., UK, Germany, and France, with plans for expansion to other regions in the future.
Additional Features and Security Enhancements
Aside from the VPN tool, Firefox 149 also introduces Split View, a feature that allows users to arrange tabs side by side within the same browser window. This feature, commonly found in other browsers like Google Chrome, is ideal for multitasking activities such as planning, comparing, note-taking, and completing administrative tasks.

Furthermore, Firefox now automatically blocks notifications and revokes permissions from websites flagged as malicious by the ‘SafeBrowsing’ security system. The latest update also addresses multiple security vulnerabilities, with 46 issues being fixed, including high severity vulnerabilities like user-after-free flaws, out-of-bounds errors, JIT engine flaws, and sandbox escape vulnerabilities.

These updates demonstrate Mozilla’s commitment to providing a secure and user-friendly browsing environment for its users.
