Enhanced Privacy: Google Messages Introduces Nude Image Blurring Feature for Android Users
Google Introduces New Safety Feature for Android Messages App
Google has announced the rollout of a new safety feature for the Messages app on Android. This feature, known as Sensitive Content Warnings, is now more widely available, following its initial introduction by Google last October.
The Sensitive Content Warnings feature is designed to detect and blur images containing nudity. However, it will only be operational if the user is signed into a Google Account within the Messages app.
When a potentially sensitive image is detected and blurred by Messages, users will be presented with several options. These include accessing a resource page on the harmful effects of nude images, blocking the sender’s number, returning to the main Messages screen, or choosing to dismiss or view the image.
In addition, a warning will be displayed when attempting to send or forward a nude image. Users will be reminded of the risks involved and required to confirm before proceeding with sending the image.
For supervised users, Sensitive Content Warnings are enabled by default, while parents and guardians can manage this feature through the Family Link app. Teens aged 13 to 17 who are unsupervised can choose to disable the feature in their Google Account settings. Adults must opt-in to use the feature, which can be done by navigating to Google Messages Settings > Protection & Safety > Manage sensitive content warnings > Warnings in Google Messages.
Google emphasizes privacy in the design of this feature. Image processing and classification occur locally on the device with the assistance of Android System SafetyCore tools. No identifiable data or content associated with this safety feature, including detected nude images, is transmitted to Google servers. Google acknowledges that the feature may not be flawless, occasionally misidentifying nudity or allowing such images to slip through undetected.
