Apple’s iOS 26.4 update adds age verification in the UK

Apple Introduces Age Verification Requirement for UK Users with iOS 26.4 Update

Apple has recently implemented a new age verification process for users in the UK as part of the iOS 26.4 update. According to a support page on Apple’s website, individuals are now required to confirm that they are over 18 years old in order to access certain services or features on their accounts.

To verify their age, UK users can either scan their ID or use a credit card. For existing Apple account holders, the company may use linked payment methods to confirm that they meet the age requirement. Alternatively, Apple will automatically activate child safety settings for users who have not completed the age verification process. These settings include blocking adult content on the web and blurring messages containing nudity.

The release of iOS 26.4 also brings new features to Apple Music, such as the ability to create AI-generated playlists and a concert discovery tool. Additionally, users can expect a variety of new emoji options. While an age verification prompt for App Store downloads was mistakenly displayed during the beta phase of iOS 26.4, Apple clarified that this message was shown in error, as reported by The Verge.

It is worth noting that Apple’s App Store and operating system do not fall under the jurisdiction of the UK’s Online Safety Act, which mandates age verification for platforms hosting content unsuitable for children. In response to Apple’s age verification initiative, Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, praised the move as a positive step for child safety and family protection, as reported by the Financial Times.
